  2. Chin Chin Laboratories

Yesterday Andrew and Shai invited us to discover their most recent project and sample a few nitro ice cream… You might have read about it recently – London has finally got its first nitro icecream bar. They designed the interior of the new Chin Chin Laboratories’s nitro icecream bar in Camden.

As a key idea behind their work they developped a mad scientists lab environement, where preparation area, display cabinet and lightning devices are all inter-connected with a lot of playfulness.
No wire on the floor; everything goes trough the pipes seems to be one of the main very practical feature. Details amongst others, that I really liked, the cords of the swing have been partially un-woven and re-woven on themselves – there’s no knot!

    IMG_0069.JPG

    * Chin Chin Laboratories are located in Camden – the address is 49 Camden Lock Place.

    IMG_0041.JPG
    IMG_0046.JPG

The confectionning and preparation areas, cabinet and display are all hold together by the tubular structure.

    IMG_0039.JPG

The lightbulbs are directly plugged on the structure.

    IMG_0047.JPG

even the drinks had that mad scientists feeling (kir royal in a pipette)

    IMG_0092.JPG

    un-woven – re-woven

** Andrew Haythornthwaite and Shai Akram began their collaboration shortly after graduating from the Royal College of Art in 2006 on the Design Products course headed by Ron Arad. Their projects have taken them to China, New Zealand and now, back to the UK.
They presented their Fruit Fishing for FoodMarketo in Milan 2010; which is based on the scientific fact that apples float and pears don’t.

    * Tòmas Alonso, Oscar Diaz, Glass Hill (Markus Bergström + Simon Jones + Joe Nunn), Max Lamb, Peter Marigold all took part to FoodMarketo for the Milan Furniture Fair last April.

** Phillips de Pury & Company successful introduce the best of new art talent to the secondary market as well as hosting a significant range of selling shows for contemporary artists and designers. http://www.phillipsdepury.com/

*** This the text that is accompanying Glass Hill piece:

We asked Markus Bergström and Joe Nunn to create
a chair that would complement their design for the
exhibition space at Phillips de Pury. The duo from
Glass Hill responded with this perfectly propor-
tioned seat that speaks to the virtues of simplicity,
form, and craftsmanship, and our need for them.
Asked about their process, they said well-consid-
ered dimensionality speaks with the greatest elo-
    quence. We agree.

‘Southern yellow pine variously planed, dimensioned
and machined. 450 mm front seat height pitched at 3
degrees to rear along 290 mm deep seat. Back rest
opens at 102.5 degrees from seat plane rising to
760mm above floor height and dropping 290 mm
towards to seat back. Overall depth of seat area from
back rest plane is 360 mm. Seat is mounted to double
rails set at an angle 6 degrees from seat edge with 8 no.
4×40 mm screws. Both rails are ex45× 60mm with a
machined top angle of 4 degrees in opposing lateral
planes. All legs and support for back rest are mortised
into this rail. Front legs mount perpendicular to rail
and seat, back leg at 24 degrees from seat angle and
back rest mount at 12.5 degrees on opposing (top)
surface. The rail’s pitch pushes the front legs out to
the limits of the chairs overall width of 340 mm dic-
tated by the square cut seat and back. The sides of the
chair are parallel.’ – Glass Hill
