  4. LOVE for Japan

Like anyone this past week, we’ve been following the aftermath of the terrible events in Japan. We decided to produce a series of posters to support and encourage your donations and asked our friends Akinori Oishi to draw and All Cats Are Grey to print. The poster will be available from both the Barbican Art Gallery Shop and from the DesignMarketo website.

Tomorrow we will start printing the first batch of posters, there are already a few pictures on DesignMarketo’s flickr: love for Japan—more pictures are coming soon…

    LOVE FOR JAPAN

    ** UPDATE **

LOVE for Japan is a poster designed by Akinori Oishi and printed by All Cats Are Grey to help support temporary housing for the earthquake+tsunami hit japanese refugees.

  5. Chin Chin Laboratories

Yesterday Andrew and Shai invited us to discover their most recent project and sample a few nitro ice cream… You might have read about it recently – London has finally got its first nitro icecream bar. They designed the interior of the new Chin Chin Laboratories’s nitro icecream bar in Camden.

As a key idea behind their work they developped a mad scientists lab environement, where preparation area, display cabinet and lightning devices are all inter-connected with a lot of playfulness.
No wire on the floor; everything goes trough the pipes seems to be one of the main very practical feature. Details amongst others, that I really liked, the cords of the swing have been partially un-woven and re-woven on themselves – there’s no knot!

    * Chin Chin Laboratories are located in Camden – the address is 49 Camden Lock Place.

The confectionning and preparation areas, cabinet and display are all hold together by the tubular structure.

    IMG_0039.JPG

The lightbulbs are directly plugged on the structure.

    IMG_0047.JPG

even the drinks had that mad scientists feeling (kir royal in a pipette)

    un-woven – re-woven

** Andrew Haythornthwaite and Shai Akram began their collaboration shortly after graduating from the Royal College of Art in 2006 on the Design Products course headed by Ron Arad. Their projects have taken them to China, New Zealand and now, back to the UK.
They presented their Fruit Fishing for FoodMarketo in Milan 2010; which is based on the scientific fact that apples float and pears don’t.

  6. Mounting the 10 degree chair

While browsing the archives, we stumbleupon this short animation that we made a little while ago and never published – it was made to explain the assembly of the flat pack chair designed by Lars Frideen and shot on location in his studio. The chair is made out of 4 elements, piece of wood pre-cut and easy to assemble – requiring no glue or screw.

    * Lars also designed the 15 wall shelves working on the same principles of sliding and interlocking simple wood elements – providing a functional storage solution.

  7. Amandine Alessandra – featured typefaces

There’s a good lot going on today with books, earlier with the St Bride book we worked on – i just received an email from Amandine about the availability of the book featuring some of her recent typographic work.

You can buy the book directly from Mark Batty Publisher or from Amazon.

    3D Typography
By Jeanette Abbink & Emily CM Anderson
    Page Count: 224 pages
    Size: 8.7 x 11 inches
    Format: Casebound
    Publication Date: June 2010
    Price: $45
    ISBN: 978-0-9841906-2-1

    The authors
Jeanette Abbink opened the design studio Rational Beauty in 2008. Prior to opening Rational Beauty, Abbink was the founding creative director of Dwell magazine. She has also served as a designer and art director for numerous magazines, including The New York Times sports magazine Play, as well as American Craft and Martha Stewart Living.

Graphic designer Emily CM Anderson was selected as an Art Directors Club Young Gun 6 in 2008. She has worked for magazines such as Dwell and American Craft, and co-designed the book Brooklyn Modern for Rizzoli.

From type crafted of steel and neon, to carefully-cut live moss, everyday items like buttons and sugar cubes, to giant installments of polythene and paper, the work in 3D Typography serves as a bold reaction to the fact that so much of today’s typography is conceived via screens.

“If you’re anything like us, you may never look at letters in quite the same way – and may even be inspired to undertake a project of your own,” said Abbink and Anderson. “As we learned, potential letterforms are everywhere, just waiting to be cut, carved, knitted, grown, spun, melted, molded, hammered, flown – and otherwise reclaimed.”

Along with a fascinating introduction by renown architecture and design critic Karrie Jacobs and interviews with artists, contributors include Amandine Alessandra, Thorbjørn Ankerstjerne, asa~ama, Autobahn, Huda Abdul Aziz, Andrew Byrom, Rhett Dashwood, Keetra Dean Dixon, Oded Ezer, Hikaru Furuhashi, Anna Garforth, Keith Hancox, HandMadeFont, Fons Hickmann, Karrie Jacobs, Gyöngy Laky, Amitis Pahlevan, Mike Perry, Clotilde Olyff, Miguel Ramirez, Camilo Rojas, Stefan Sagmeister, Dan Tobin Smith, Typeworkshop, Thijs Verbeek, Thomas Voorn and many, many more. For the full list of contributors and to learn more about the book visit the official website, http://3DTypographyBook.com.

    * bravo Amandine! :)

  9. DesignMarketo presents a popup bookshop for Idea Books

For its second show, DesignMarketo has been commisionned by Idea Books for their popup bookshop on St Martins Lane Hotel, for which we worked with designer Lars Frideen. Lars came with some genius idea and the shop looks trully nice. Idea Books gathered a rare selection of books and magazine. The selection is presented using Lars Frideen’s 15° shelves system which is working as a jewel box for those volumes.
